Pakistan Hockey: Looking To Revive Its Lost Glory

Hockey, the national sport of Pakistan. A sport where once Pakistan were considered as the undisputed, invincible champions but lost its reputation as time went by. Pakistan last won a major hockey event in 1994, the Hockey World Cup. The period after 1994 can be considered a drought for the national hockey team. As they continued to slip in the world rankings, the level of hockey being played by our team kept deteriorating. Mind you Pakistan still holds the record for winning the most hockey world cups.

Today Pakistan is one of the lowest ranked teams playing the game. Since Pakistan is not in the top teams of the world, it had to go through the world cup qualifiers. Unexpectedly, Pakistan took the qualifiers tournament by storm, winning the final against Japan to qualify for the 2010 World Cup. Pakistan will now join the nine other teams, with two places still up for grabs, which have already made it to the final round.

Its great to know as a Pakistani that my team will be competing with the world’s top teams competing for the world cup, but Pakistan has much more to do than win the world cup, Pakistan Hockey must regain the superpower status it one enjoyed in the hockey world and this could be the much needed boost Pakistan needed, to revive its lost glory.
